Tato-II Hydro Electric Project

The Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs (CCEA) has approved an investment of ₹8,146.21 crore for the construction of the 700 MW Tato-II Hydro Electric Project (HEP) in the Shi Yomi district of Arunachal Pradesh. This project, which is a run-of-river type, is a major step toward harnessing the state’s vast hydroelectric potential.

Project Details and Benefits

  • Execution: The project will be executed through a joint venture between the North Eastern Electric Power Corporation Ltd. (NEEPCO) and the Government of Arunachal Pradesh.
  • Timeline and Output: The Tato-II HEP is expected to be completed within 72 months (six years). Once operational, it will have an installed capacity of 700 MW (4 units of 175 MW each) and is projected to generate an estimated 2,738.06 million units of clean energy annually.
  • Regional and National Impact: The power generated will not only improve the energy supply within Arunachal Pradesh but also contribute to balancing the national power grid, a critical function of hydropower projects that can quickly adjust output to meet peak demand.
  • Socio-Economic Development: As part of the project, Arunachal Pradesh will receive 12% free power and an additional 1% will be allocated to the Local Area Development Fund (LADF) to finance essential infrastructure such as hospitals, schools, marketplaces, and playgrounds.
