Tevised Green India Mission

The Government of India, on June 17, 2025, released a revised roadmap for the National Mission for Green India (GIM), also known as the Green India Mission. This updated plan marks a significant step in India’s efforts to combat climate change and enhance its green cover.

About National Mission for Green India (GIM)

  • Launch and Context:
    • The GIM was initially rolled out in 2011 as one of the eight missions under India’s overarching National Action Plan on Climate Change (NAPCC).
    • The revised document was unveiled on World Day to Combat Desertification and Drought (June 17).
  • Core Aim & Objectives:
    • The fundamental aim remains to combat climate change through both mitigation and adaptation strategies.
    • This involves increasing forest and tree cover, and undertaking ecological restoration of degraded ecosystems and forests.
    • It also seeks to improve the livelihoods of communities dependent on forest produce.
  • Specific Mission Goals (Original Mission Goals):
    • Expand forest/tree cover by 5 million hectares (mha) and improve the quality of another 5 mha of forest and non-forest land (a total of 10 mha from original objectives).
    • Boost ecosystem services, including carbon storage, water management, and biodiversity.
    • Improve livelihoods for 3 million households by increasing income from forest-based activities.
  • Revised Mission Goals
    • The revised Mission would adopt ‘Micro-Ecosystem’ approach to focus on identification of intervention pockets in the highly vulnerable landscapes like Aravallis, Western Ghats, Arid regions of North West India, Mangroves, Indian Himalayan Region (IHR) etc..
    • The revised plan aims for afforestation/restoration over 24-25 million hectares (via GIM and convergence).
    • GIM is expected to directly treat 1 million hectares by 2030.
    • In pursuance of India’s commitments under its Nationally Determined Contribution (NDC), the National Mission for a Green India aims to create an additional carbon sink of 2.5 to 3.0 billion tonnes of CO2 equivalent
