INS Sudarshini Flags Off on Global Voyage ‘Lokayan 26’

The Indian Navy’s sail training ship INS Sudarshini on 20 January embarked on a ten-month transoceanic expedition, Lokayan 26, marking a landmark global voyage aimed at showcasing India’s rich seafaring heritage and strengthening maritime cooperation among nations.

The expedition was formally flagged off from Naval Base Kochi, where a commemorative Lokayan 26 plaque was also unveiled to mark the occasion.

Scope of the Expedition

During its ten-month deployment, INS Sudarshini will:

  • Sail nearly 22,000 nautical miles,
  • Visit 18 ports across 13 countries, and
  • Engage with navies, maritime institutions, and local communities to promote cultural and professional exchanges.

Participation in International Maritime Festival

A key highlight of Lokayan 26 will be INS Sudarshini’s participation in Escale à Sète, one of Europe’s premier maritime festivals, scheduled to be held in France during March–April 2026. The event brings together historic and traditional sailing vessels from across the world.

INS Sudarshini serves as a unique platform for training sea cadets and officer trainees in traditional seamanship, celestial navigation, and wind-based sailing skills.
