U.S. Conducts Test Launch of Minuteman III ICBM Under ‘Glory Trip 254’

The U.S. military successfully conducted a routine test launch of an unarmed intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM) under “Glory Trip 254” on November 5, 2025, to verify the reliability and readiness of the country’s nuclear deterrent force.

Launch Details:

  • Missile Type: Minuteman III Intercontinental Ballistic Missile (ICBM).
  • Launch Site: Vandenberg Space Force Base, California.
  • Flight Path: The missile traveled 4,200 miles (6,760 km) westward.
  • Impact Zone: Ronald Reagan Ballistic Missile Defense Test Site, Marshall Islands.
  • The missile briefly exited Earth’s atmosphere before returning on a ballistic trajectory, typical of ICBM flight paths.

Purpose of the Test:

  • To ensure nuclear force readiness, reliability, and precision of U.S. strategic systems.
  • The test was not a response to any global event but part of regular readiness operations.
  • Demonstrates operational confidence in the ICBM fleet under the Air Force Global Strike Command (AFGSC).

Minuteman III ICBM:

  • In service since the 1970s, the Minuteman III is a land-based nuclear missile and a core component of the U.S. nuclear triad.
  • It is capable of carrying multiple independent reentry vehicles (MIRVs), each potentially armed with a nuclear warhead.
  • ICBMs typically travel over 3,400 miles (5,500 km), exiting and re-entering the atmosphere in unpowered ballistic flight.

Modernization Plan:

  • The U.S. is phasing out the Minuteman III and replacing it with the LGM-35 Sentinel, being developed by Northrop Grumman.
  • The Sentinel system is expected to become operational by 2030.
  • Until then, maintaining and testing the Minuteman III fleet remains a “top priority” for AFGSC.

Significance:

  • Reinforces the credibility of U.S. strategic deterrence amid growing global security challenges.
  • Showcases the continuity of nuclear modernization efforts while upholding international transparency and compliance under strategic arms agreements
