UN-Backed ‘Sevilla Forum on Debt’ Launched to Address Global Debt Crisis

A new UN-backed initiative, the Sevilla Forum on Debt, was officially launched on 22 October to assist developing nations struggling with unsustainable debt burdens.

  • Over three billion people currently live in economies that spend more on debt repayments than on health or education.
  • Objectives: The forum aims to:
    • Promote fairer lending practices.
    • Enable faster and equitable debt restructuring.
    • Drive long-term reform of the post-World War II financial system.
  • Hosting and Support:
    • The forum is hosted by Spain and supported by the United Nations.
    • It seeks to maintain global focus on the debt crisis while transforming commitments from the Fourth International Conference on Financing for Development (FFD4) — held in Seville in June — into practical actions.
  • Global Participation:
    • The platform brings together governments, finance ministers, and creditors from both developed and developing countries.
    • UN Secretary-General described it as “a global dialogue on debt”, aimed at delivering financial justice and ensuring that borrowing benefits developing economies rather than burdening them.
  • Support for the Sevilla Commitment:
    • The forum will also implement the Sevilla Commitment, an ambitious roadmap adopted at the FFD4 conference.
    • The commitment outlines measures to:
      • Reduce borrowing costs,
      • Facilitate timely and fair debt restructuring, and
      • Enhance transparency and accountability in global finance.
  • Significance:
The Sevilla Forum marks a major step toward building a fairer and more sustainable international financial system, addressing the pressing challenge of global debt distress that continues to hamper economic growth and social development in many developing nations.
