Union Budget 2026–27 Makes History with First-Ever Sunday Presentation

As Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman presented the Union Budget 2026–27, an unusual historical first drew attention — the Budget was tabled on a Sunday. While Budgets have occasionally been presented on weekends in the past, this marks the first Sunday presentation in India’s fiscal history.

Why This Is Unprecedented

Historically, governments have avoided presenting the Union Budget on Sundays, often adjusting dates when February 1 or February 28 fell on a holiday. However, in 2026, the government chose to stick to February 1, even though it fell on a Sunday.

Historical Context

  • Before 2017, the Union Budget was traditionally presented on the last working day of February.
  • In 1999, when February 28 fell on a Sunday, then Finance Minister Yashwant Sinha presented the Budget a day earlier, on Saturday, February 27, under the Atal Bihari Vajpayee-led government.
  • The 1999 Budget is also remembered for ending a colonial-era convention — Budgets were earlier presented at 5 pm, a timing aligned with working hours in the United Kingdom. Yashwant Sinha shifted the presentation to 11 am, prioritising Indian administrative and parliamentary convenience.

The 2017 Reform and Its Impact

A major reform in 2017 fixed February 1 as the permanent date for the Union Budget. The objective was to give Parliament, Union ministries and state governments adequate time to debate, approve and operationalise budgetary proposals before the new financial year begins on April 1.

As a result of this reform, February 1, 2026, despite being a Sunday, was retained, making the Sunday Budget unavoidable.
