• Approval: The Union Cabinet has cleared the continuation of the Biomedical Research Career Programme (BRCP), Phase-III.
• Implementation Period:
  • Phase-III: 2025-26 to 2030-31
  • Additional 6 years (2031-32 to 2037-38) to service fellowships and grants approved till 2030-31.
• Partners: Implemented through a partnership between:
  • Department of Biotechnology (DBT), Government of India
  • Wellcome Trust (WT), United Kingdom
  • Special Purpose Vehicle (SPV), India Alliance

Objectives of Phase-III:

• Nurture top-tier scientific talent for cutting-edge biomedical research.
• Promote interdisciplinary research for translational innovation.
• Align with Viksit Bharat goals to strengthen skills, innovation, and research ecosystem.

Background:

• The Biomedical Research Career Programme (BRCP) was launched in 2008-09 by the Department of Biotechnology in partnership with the Wellcome Trust (UK).
• The programme has played a key role in supporting Indian researchers in biomedical sciences through fellowships and research grants.
