United States Withdraws from Over 60 International Organisations

The United States has announced its withdrawal from more than 60 international organisations, including several United Nations bodies and the India–France-led International Solar Alliance (ISA).

US President Donald Trump signed a memorandum titled “Withdrawing the United States from International Organisations, Conventions, and Treaties that are Contrary to the Interests of the United States” on 7 January. Following the signing, Trump stated that continued membership and support for these organisations were contrary to US national interests.

According to the memorandum, the US will withdraw from 66 international organisations, comprising 35 non-UN organisations and 31 UN entities. The President directed all executive departments and agencies to take immediate steps to implement the withdrawals at the earliest possible time.

For United Nations entities, the directive specifies that withdrawal would involve ceasing participation and financial contributions, to the extent permitted under US law.

The list of organisations from which the US is withdrawing includes prominent global institutions such as the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), the International Solar Alliance, the Science and Technology Centre in Ukraine, and the UN Department of Economic and Social Affairs, among others.

The move marks a significant shift in US engagement with multilateral institutions and is expected to have implications for global cooperation on issues ranging from climate change and renewable energy to science, technology, and development policy.
