UNSC 1267 Sanctions Committee

India is preparing to present a fresh case before the United Nations Security Council’s (UNSC) 1267 Sanctions Committee to officially designate The Resistance Front (TRF) as a terrorist organization. This comes in the aftermath of the 22 April Pahalgam terror attack, which killed 26 civilians and worsened tensions between India and Pakistan.

  • A special Indian delegation will present new evidence linking TRF to the Pahalgam attack and alleging Pakistani support for the group. TRF is widely believed to be a front for Lashkar-e-Taiba, a group already banned by the UN. Despite growing evidence, past proposals to sanction TRF have been blocked by China and Pakistan.
  • The 1267 Sanctions Committee, established in 1999, initially targeted Al-Qaeda and the Taliban. Its mandate has since expanded to include ISIS and affiliated groups. The committee, comprising all 15 UNSC members, enforces measures like asset freezes, travel bans, and arms embargoes on listed individuals and entities.
  • India’s push reflects its ongoing diplomatic efforts to isolate Pakistan-based terror groups on the international stage, though geopolitical hurdles remain, particularly due to Chinese opposition.
