Uttarakhand to assess ‘carrying capacity’ of cities

The Uttarakhand government has initiated assessments of the “carrying capacity” of its cities within the Himalayan state. This move aims to address and prevent ecological imbalances, particularly in the face of heavy tourism and construction activities.

Understanding “Carrying Capacity”:

  • Definition: “Carrying capacity” refers to the maximum number of individuals an ecosystem or a specific area can sustainably support without degrading natural resources or causing significant environmental damage.

Rationale Behind the Initiative:

  • Ecological Alignment: The state government is committed to aligning its development policies with the ecology of the hill state.
  • Impact of Tourism: Uttarakhand is a major tourist destination, attracting large numbers of visitors to its hill stations and Hindu shrines. In the summer of 2025 alone, 37 lakh people visited these shrines.
  • Infrastructure Strain: Such large numbers often pose a problem as the existing ecology and infrastructure struggle to cater to the heavy influx.
  • Unplanned Construction: Construction activities in the sensitive Himalayan region can be ecologically harmful if not carried out in a planned and sustainable manner.
