V.O. Chidambaranar Port becomes First Indian Major Port to Implement Digital Twin

The V.O. Chidambaranar Port Authority has achieved a major technological milestone by becoming the first port in India to launch a Digital Twin initiative for port management. The move marks a significant step toward smart, efficient, and technology-driven maritime operations.

What is a Digital Twin?

A Digital Twin is a real-time virtual replica of physical infrastructure and operations. In this case, the platform will replicate the port’s infrastructure, operational assets, and maritime ecosystem, enabling enhanced monitoring and data-driven decision-making.

Key Technologies Used

The system integrates several advanced technologies to mirror real-time port operations, including:

  • Internet of Things (IoT) sensors
  • Global Positioning System (GPS) tracking
  • LiDAR mapping
  • Drone imaging
  • Closed-Circuit Television (CCTV) networks

These technologies will continuously capture and update real-time data, enabling better coordination among operational departments.

Key Features of the Platform

  • Real-time monitoring: Provides live visualisation of berth occupancy, vessel movements, crane utilisation, and yard capacity.
  • Predictive maintenance: Uses AI-based asset monitoring to track cargo-handling equipment and reduce downtime.
  • Berth and traffic optimisation: Enables intelligent scheduling of vessels and cargo operations to reduce congestion and waiting times.
  • Energy and emissions tracking: Supports sustainability management through data-based monitoring of energy usage and emissions.
  • Scenario simulation: Allows operators to conduct “what-if” modelling to prepare for peak demand or operational disruptions.
