Vela carli-Rare Dual-Sex Crab Discovered in Western Ghats

Scientists have discovered a rare freshwater crab exhibiting both male and female traits in the forests of Silent Valley National Park, located in the biodiverse Western Ghats.

The crab belongs to the species Vela carli and was found to display gynandromorphy, a rare biological condition where an organism possesses both male and female characteristics.

Key Findings

  • The discovery was made during biodiversity surveys in the region.
  • Out of over 120 crabs examined, only three individuals exhibited this dual-sex condition.
  • The crabs were found in tree holes within forested areas.

Scientific Significance

This marks the first recorded instance of gynandromorphy in Gecarcinucidae, making it a notable breakthrough in crustacean biology. The phenomenon itself is extremely rare in crustaceans and provides valuable insights into developmental biology and genetic variation.

The species Vela carli is endemic to the Central Western Ghats, meaning it is found nowhere else in the world, highlighting the ecological importance of conserving this region.
