Vitamin B9

A recent AIIMS study found that nearly 41% of urban adolescents in government schools across north India suffer from folate (vitamin B9) deficiency. Girls exhibited a higher rate of deficiency compared to boys.

About Vitamin B9

  • Folate, or folic acid, is a water-soluble, naturally occurring form of vitamin B9. Vitamin B9 is essential for red blood cell formation and healthy cell growth and function.
  • It plays a crucial role in the developmental years of children.
  • Folate is necessary for cells to carry oxygen throughout the body.
  • Insufficient folate can lead to anaemia (lack of enough red blood cells). Folate is involved in the synthesis and repair of DNA and RNA.
  • Vitamin B9 is vital for supporting rapid growth phases in children. It aids in the production of red blood cells and the development of the central nervous system during early childhood.
  • In growing children, folate ensures proper brain function and emotional health.
  • It is also crucial for tissue growth and cellular repair, ongoing processes during childhood.
  • Inadequate folate levels during formative years can result in growth retardation, cognitive delays, and anaemia.
  • Maintaining sufficient levels of vitamin B9 is key to supporting both physical and intellectual development.
