What is an ATA Carnet?

The ATA Carnet is an international uniform customs document that allows duty-free and tax-free temporary admission of goods into a member country. It is accepted in 79 countries, including India, all of which are parties to the Customs Convention on ATA Carnet.

  • It eliminates the need for raising a customs bond, paying duty, or fulfilling multiple customs formalities when goods are moved across borders for a short period.
  • It is widely used for professional equipment, goods for trade fairs and exhibitions, and vehicles for temporary use.
  • In India, the Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FICCI) is the National Guaranteeing & Issuing Association authorised to issue ATA Carnets.
