What is Blue Sparrow Missile?

Reports indicate that the strike which killed 86-year-old cleric Ali Khamenei was carried out using the Blue Sparrow, a powerful air-launched missile capable of travelling to the edge of space before descending at extremely high speed.

The missile was reportedly fired during a coordinated Israeli operation targeting senior Iranian leadership in Tehran, striking Khamenei’s heavily guarded compound on Pasteur Street where several officials had gathered for a meeting.

About the Blue Sparrow Missile

The Blue Sparrow missile follows a quasi-ballistic trajectory, meaning it climbs high above the atmosphere before descending sharply onto its target.

It was originally developed as part of Israel’s Sparrow missile family, which also includes:

  • Black Sparrow missile
  • Silver Sparrow missile

These systems were initially designed to simulate Soviet-era Scud missiles during missile defence testing. Over time, the Blue Sparrow was adapted for operational strike missions.

Key Technical Features

  • Length: About 6.5 metres
  • Weight: Around 1.9 tonnes
  • Range: Approximately 2,000 km (1,240 miles)
  • Launch platform: Fighter aircraft such as the McDonnell Douglas F-15 Eagle

After launch, a booster rocket propels the missile toward the edge of space, after which it separates and re-enters the atmosphere at very high speed, plunging steeply toward the target.

Strategic Advantage

The missile’s steep descent and high-altitude flight path significantly reduce reaction time for air defence systems, making interception extremely difficult. This allows the weapon to strike heavily protected targets with minimal warning, which is why it is considered effective against high-value and fortified targets.
