What is CROPIC?

The Union Ministry of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare plans to launch CROPIC.

  • Name: CROPIC (Collection of Real Time Observations & Photo of Crops)
  • Initiating Ministry: Ministry of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare.
  • Purpose: To gather crop information using field photographs and AI-based models.

Methodology:

  • Crops will be photographed 4-5 times during their growth cycle.
  • Photographs will be collected using a mobile application developed by the Ministry.
  • Data will be crowd-sourced directly from farmers.
  • Photographs will be analyzed for crop type, crop stage, crop damage, and extent of damage.

Technology:

  • AI-based cloud platform for photo analysis and information extraction.
  • Web-based dashboard for data visualization.

Applications:

  • Assess crop health and potential mid-season losses.
  • Assist officials in collecting photographs for compensation or insurance payments to farmers.
  • Create a rich directory of crop signatures.
  • Automate loss assessment and compensation under the Pradhan Mantri Fasal Bima Yojana (PMFBY).

Initial Rollout:

  • Initially in at least 50 districts per season.
  • Districts will be well-distributed across different agro-climatic zones.
  • Will cover three major notified crops in each district for each season initially.
