What is FEWS NET?

Why in the news?

  • The rainy season between March to May 2022 was the driest one in over 70 years for Ethiopia, Kenya and Somalia. (Down To Earth)
  • In the first week of June 2022, in a joint statement by agencies like the Intergovernmental Authority on Development Climate Prediction and Applications Center, the Food and Agriculture Organization, the FEWS NET and the World Food Program (WFP) warned the situation leading to a famine not seen in recent history.

What is FEWS NET?

  • The Famine Early Warning Systems Network (FEWS NET) is a leading provider of early warning and analysis on food insecurity.
  • Created by USAID in 1985 to help decision-makers plan for humanitarian crises, FEWS NET provides evidence-based analysis on approximately 30 countries.
  • Implementing team members include NASA, NOAA, USDA, USGS, and CHC-UCSB, along with Chemonics International Inc. and Kimetrica.
