What is Murban?

Indian LPG carrier ‘Shivalik’, carrying about 40,000 metric tonnes of liquefied petroleum gas (LPG), reached Mundra Port on March 16, 2026, after safely transiting through the strategically significant Strait of Hormuz.

According to the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas, another vessel, Jag Laadki, carrying about 81,000 metric tonnes of Murban crude oil, is also safely en route to India. The tanker departed from Fujairah and is expected to arrive at Mundra Port on March 17, 2026.

What is Fujairah?

Fujairah, located outside the Strait of Hormuz, serves as a key export outlet for the United Arab Emirates. The port handles roughly 1 million barrels per day of Murban crude oil, equivalent to about 1% of global oil demand.

What is Murban?

Murban crude is a high-quality, light, and sweet crude oil produced by the Abu Dhabi National Oil Company from onshore fields in Abu Dhabi. It has emerged as a major benchmark crude for Middle Eastern oil, particularly for Asian markets, due to its stable supply and favourable refining characteristics.

The safe arrival of the LPG carrier and the expected arrival of the Murban crude shipment highlight the continued flow of energy supplies to India despite geopolitical concerns in the Strait of Hormuz region, a critical global energy chokepoint.
