World Bee Day 2025 Theme

On May 20, 2025, the Khadi and Village Industries Commission (KVIC), under the Union Ministry of Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises, celebrated World Bee Day at its Central Office in Mumbai under the banner ‘Sweet Revolution Utsav’.

About World Bee Day

  • The theme for this year’s celebration was “Bee inspired by nature to nourish us all,” highlighting the essential role of bees in maintaining ecological balance and ensuring food security.
  • The date May 20 also marks the birth anniversary of Anton Janša, an 18th-century Slovenian pioneer of modern beekeeping, renowned for his admiration of bees’ industriousness and minimal needs.

Beekeeping in India

  • During the event, scientists emphasized the critical role of bees, revealing that they contribute to the pollination of nearly 75% of food crops.
  • The decline of bee populations could endanger around 30% of global food crops and 90% of wild plant species, underscoring the urgency of conservation efforts.
  • The KVIC Chairman acknowledged the transformative impact of the Prime Minister’s ‘Sweet Revolution’, which positioned honey production as a means of economic empowerment and health improvement. He remarked that KVIC’s proactive work in this domain is a key driver of the vision of an Atmanirbhar Bharat (self-reliant India).
  • A highlight of the event was the recognition of the Honey Mission’s remarkable achievements and the historic contribution of the Central Bee Research & Training Institute (CBRTI), Pune, established in 1962. CBRTI has played a pioneering role in advancing beekeeping research and training across the country.
