World Cotton Day 2025

The Union Minister of Textiles celebrated World Cotton Day 2025 on October 7 in New Delhi. The event was jointly organized by the Ministry of Textiles and the Confederation of Indian Textile Industry (CITI). The theme for this year’s celebration was “Cotton 2040: Technology, Climate & Competitiveness.”

Government’s Vision and Commitments

  • The Minister reaffirmed the government’s goal of achieving a USD 350 billion textile sector by 2030, including USD 100 billion in exports.
  • The government is also committed to advancing carbon neutrality in the textile and cotton value chain.
  • A Mission for Cotton Productivity is under active consideration to bridge the gap between India’s yields and global standards.

Cotton Productivity: Current Scenario

  • India accounts for 40% of the world’s cotton cultivation area.
  • However, productivity remains low at around 450 kg per hectare, compared to 2,000 kg per hectare in several other countries.
  • The new mission aims to boost productivity through technology adoption, better seed quality, and sustainable practices.

Policy Support

  • The government also announced the Minimum Support Prices (MSP) for cotton to ensure farmer income stability and market confidence.
