Green Hydrogen Initiatives in India

  • National Green Hydrogen Mission: it was launched in 2023 with an initial outlay of USD 2.4 billion. The mission targets 5 million metric tonnes of green hydrogen production annually by 2030 and is propelling rapid developments across the sector.
  • Allocation of 862,000 TPA green hydrogen production capacity to 19 companies.
  • Award of 3,000 MW annual electrolyzer manufacturing capacity to 15 firms.
  • Launch of pilot projects in critical sectors such as steel, mobility, and shipping.
  • Rollout of India’s Green Hydrogen Certification Scheme, enhancing credibility and traceability.
  • Exemption from Environmental Clearance for Green Hydrogen and Green Ammonia plants, easing regulatory hurdles.
  • The Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways (MoPSW) has identified three strategic portsKandla, Paradip, and Tuticorin—to be developed as Green Hydrogen Hubs.

The Secretary’s address emphasized that India’s integrated approach—spanning policy reform, infrastructure development, and industrial collaboration—is setting the stage for a sustainable and self-reliant green energy future.
