World Lion Day 2025

The Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change celebrated World Lion Day – 2025 on August 10 at the Barda Wildlife Sanctuary in Gujarat, highlighting the success of Asiatic lion conservation efforts in the state. World Lion Day is an annual event that aims to raise global awareness about the need to protect and conserve lions.

Key Highlights from the Celebration:

  • Population Growth: According to the May 2025 lion population estimation, the Asiatic lion population in Gujarat has grown to 891, a remarkable 32% increase from 674 in 2020. This success is attributed to sustained conservation efforts under “Project Lion”.
  • Geographic Expansion: The majestic animals now roam freely across an area of approximately 35,000 square kilometers in 11 districts of the Saurashtra region. This marks a significant expansion from their traditional habitat in Gir.
  • Significance of Barda: The celebration was held at the Barda Wildlife Sanctuary, which is being developed as a second home for the Asiatic lion. The sanctuary, located about 100 km from Gir, has seen a natural migration of lions, with a population of 17 lions now recorded there, including 6 adults and 11 cubs. This is the first time a lion population has been established in Barda since 1879.
  • Conservation Initiatives: The government has launched projects worth ₹180 crore to boost lion conservation and ecotourism in the region. These initiatives include the development of a safari park in Barda, the establishment of a National Referral Centre for Wildlife Healthcare in Junagadh, and the deployment of 247 new vehicles for patrolling and rescue operations.
