16th India–Japan Annual Summit

Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi paid a three-day official visit to India (1–3 July 2026) and held talks with Narendra Modi during the 16th India–Japan Annual Summit.

  • The two countries announced 16 major outcomes, expanding cooperation across strategic, economic, technological, energy, and defence sectors.

Major Outcomes

  • India and Japan adopted the India–Japan Joint Declaration on Economic Security to strengthen supply chain resilience and promote project-based collaboration in semiconductors, critical minerals, artificial intelligence (AI), information and communication technology (ICT), clean energy, and pharmaceuticals.
  • Both countries adopted the India–Japan Joint Statement on Cooperation in the Field of Artificial Intelligence, elevating bilateral cooperation in AI research, development, and innovation.
  • A Joint Statement on Energy Resilience was adopted to enhance cooperation in:
    • Strategic petroleum reserves.
    • Crude oil stockpiling.
    • Maritime energy transport.
    • Joint energy investments.
  • India and Japan announced that 2027 will be celebrated as the India–Japan Year of Shared Horizons to commemorate the 75th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations.

Defence Cooperation

  • India and Japan signed their first-ever defence co-development project.
  • The project, named UNICORN (Unified Complex Radio Antenna/NORA-50), is a state-of-the-art stealth mast that integrates multiple communication antennas into a single compact, spire-shaped dome, enhancing the stealth and communication capabilities of naval platforms.

Agriculture and Clean Energy

  • The two countries launched the India–Japan Cooperative Biogas for Growth (CBG) Initiative.
  • Under the initiative, India and Japan will collaborate to establish 1,000 biogas and organic fertiliser plants across India by leveraging the country’s dairy cooperative network.
