The 2026 Commonwealth Games, also the 23rd edition (XXIII), officially opened on July 23, 2026, at Hydro in Glasgow, Scotland, introducing a more streamlined and cost-efficient model for the multi-sport event.
Key Highlights
Victoria, Australia, was originally awarded the hosting rights for the 2026 Commonwealth Games.
However, in July 2023, the Australian state withdrew as the estimated cost of hosting the Games exceeded initial projections.
Subsequently, Glasgow agreed to host the 2026 Commonwealth Games on the condition that the event would be organised with a reduced budget and without major new infrastructure projects.
The Glasgow edition has been organised with a budget of around £150 million, funded largely through the settlement following Victoria’s withdrawal, along with commercial revenue.
The sports programme has been significantly reduced to 10 disciplines, compared with 19 disciplines at the Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games.
Wrestling, hockey, badminton and cricket have been dropped from the Glasgow 2026 programme.
Shooting has also been excluded for the second consecutive Commonwealth Games.
The reduced sports programme is expected to affect India’s medal prospects, with the country likely to rely more heavily on athletics, weightlifting, boxing and judo.
Olympic medallists Mirabai Chanu and Lovlina Borgohain served as India’s ceremonial leaders at the opening ceremony of the Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games.
