Chinese mathematicians Hong Wang and Yu Deng, American mathematician John Pardon, and Canadian mathematician Jacob Tsimerman have been awarded the Fields Medal 2026.
The medals were presented during the opening ceremony of the International Congress of Mathematicians (ICM) in Philadelphia.
Hong Wang became only the third woman to receive the Fields Medal since its inception in 1936.
She follows Maryam Mirzakhani of Iran, who won the medal in 2014, and Maryna Viazovska of Ukraine, who received it in 2022.
Hong Wang was recognised for her work on a decades-old conjecture concerning the movement of needles in three-dimensional spaces.
Yu Deng, associated with the University of Chicago, was recognised for his work connecting microscopic and macroscopic descriptions of gases.
John Pardon was honoured for work that solved major problems in topology and geometry.
Jacob Tsimerman of the University of Toronto was recognised for developing powerful new techniques in algebraic geometry, helping advance research on longstanding mathematical problems.
About Fields Medal
The Fields Medal, often described as the “Nobel Prize of Mathematics,” is awarded every four years by the International Mathematical Union (IMU).
The award recognises outstanding mathematical discoveries by researchers under the age of 40.
The honour includes 15,000 Canadian dollars (US$10,650) and a gold medallion featuring the likeness of the ancient Greek mathematician Archimedes.
Indian connection: Manjul Bhargava became the first person of Indian origin to win the Fields Medal in 2014.
He was followed by Indian-born Australian mathematician Akshay Venkatesh, who received the medal in 2018.
