Why in News?

Leaders at the 52nd G7 Summit, held in Évian, France (15–17 June 2026), adopted a series of declarations aimed at strengthening global security, regional stability, maritime security, and cooperation against transnational organised crime. Narendra Modi also participated in the Outreach Session on “Forging New Partnerships and Rebuilding International Solidarity.”

Key Highlights of the G7 Summit

  • The G7 leaders welcomed the United States–Iran agreement reached under Donald Trump, describing it as an opportunity to:
    • Reduce tensions in West Asia.
    • Prevent Iran from acquiring nuclear weapons.
    • Promote regional peace and stability.
  • The leaders reaffirmed the importance of safe maritime navigation through the Strait of Hormuz and supported measures to strengthen regional maritime security.
  • The G7 also adopted a declaration to intensify action against drug trafficking, recognising it as a growing threat to national security, public health and economic stability.
  • Partner countries Brazil and South Korea joined the initiative to combat transnational organised crime.
  • The leaders agreed to adopt a coordinated, evidence-based strategy targeting both the supply and demand of illicit drugs, with special emphasis on strengthening port and maritime security.

  • Prime Minister Narendra Modi participated in the Outreach Session on “Forging New Partnerships and Rebuilding International Solidarity.”
  • The session focused on enhancing international cooperation to address major global challenges and strengthen multilateral partnerships.
