8th edition of Poshan Pakhwada

The Union Ministry of Women and Child Development has launched the 8th edition of Poshan Pakhwada, a nationwide campaign to raise awareness about nutrition and early childhood development. The campaign is being observed from April 9 to April 23, 2026.

This year’s theme, “Maximizing Brain Development in the First Six Years of Life,” highlights the importance of early childhood, as scientific evidence suggests that over 85% of brain development occurs before the age of six.

The Ministry emphasized that the first 1,000 days of life—from pregnancy to two years of age—are especially critical for a child’s brain development, physical growth, and overall well-being.

The initiative is part of the government’s flagship programme, Poshan Abhiyaan, launched in 2018 to improve nutritional outcomes across the country. Since its inception, the programme has recorded:

  • Over 150 crore sensitisation activities
  • More than 9.8 crore community-based events
  • Organisation of eight Poshan Maahs and seven Poshan Pakhwadas

During the campaign, Anganwadi centres nationwide will conduct awareness sessions, home visits, and community outreach programmes focusing on maternal and child nutrition, breastfeeding, complementary feeding, and early learning.

Additionally, Poshan Melas and other initiatives will be organised to encourage healthy dietary practices and improved caregiving among families.
