African Union and ECOWAS suspend Burkina Faso

The African Union (AU) on January 31, 2022 suspended Burkina Faso a week after the country suffered its latest coup, as envoys from West Africa and the UN headed for talks with the new junta.

  • The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) also suspended Burkina Faso from its ranks and warned of possible sanctions pending the outcome of meetings with the military government.
  • On January 24, mutineering soldiers had detained President Roch Marc Christian Kabore amid rising public anger at his failure to stem violence by armed groups ravaging the impoverished nation.

  • The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) is made up of fifteen member countries that are located in the Western African region.
  • The Atlantic Ocean forms the western as well as the southern borders of the West African region.

About African Union

  • The African Union (AU) is a continental body consisting of the 55 member states that make up the countries of the African Continent.
  • It was officially launched in 2002 as a successor to the Organisation of African Unity (OAU, 1963-1999).
