Annual Pulicat Day 2019 to be observed on Feb 2

  • The Eighth Annual Pulicat Day wil be observed on February 2, 2019 at Pulicat to create awareness among people about the importance of protecting the lagoon.
  • The day is celebrated as the world Wetlands day, with activities like catamaran race, rangoli competition,quiz and drawing competition for children, heritage walk and folklore programs.
  • Day is also meant to create awareness among people about the fragile awareness among people about the fragile lagoon (India’s  second largest brackish water lake) and its beautiful heritage.
  • The wetland was one of the northeast monsoon cloud attracting regions in the country. It was a centre of cotton route once.The economic boom and unplanned industrial expansion have led to exploitation of water basin to the lagoon.
  • Located in the Buckingham canal that stretched from Kakinada in Andhra Pradesh and Marakkanam in Tamilnadu, pulicat lake was once once a prominent port of south east coast for cotton export which attracted the Arabs in 700AD, Europeans in 1502 and Japanese in 1619 in AD.
