Appointment of Chairperson in the National Statistical Commission

The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet (ACC) has approved the appointment of Saibal Chattopadhyay as the Chairperson of the National Statistical Commission.

Dr. Saibal Chattopadhyay is the former Director of Indian Institute of Management Calcutta.

About National Statistical Commission (NSC)

The National Statistical Commission (NSC) was established in 2005 as the nodal body for core statistical activities in India.

The NSC is mandated to evolve, monitor, and enforce statistical priorities, standards, and coordination across the national statistical system.

The Commission comprises a part-time Chairperson, four part-time Members, the CEO of NITI Aayog as an ex-officio Member, while the Secretary, Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation (MoSPI) serves as its Secretary.

The NSC formulates national policies on official statistics, standardises statistical concepts, definitions, classifications, and methodologies, and lays down national quality standards for core statistics.

It also monitors and reviews the functioning of the statistical system and recommends measures to improve the quality, reliability, and public trust in official statistics.
