Why in News?

Sediments preserved beneath Bakhira Lake in Sant Kabir Nagar district of Uttar Pradesh have revealed a 25,000-year record of changes in the Indian Summer Monsoon (ISM). The palaeoclimate record can provide valuable insights into past monsoon variability and may help improve climate models, predict future monsoon behaviour and strengthen water-resource management in the Central Ganga Plain.

About Bakhira Lake

Bakhira Lake is a perennial oxbow/floodplain wetland that forms part of the Ghaghara–Rapti alluvial system. It was formed through the migration of the Rapti River and the eventual cut-off of a former river channel.

It is one of the largest wetlands of Uttar Pradesh and was designated a Ramsar Site in 2022.

The sediments accumulated over thousands of years act as a natural archive of past environmental and climatic conditions. Their analysis provides evidence of long-term variations in the Indian Summer Monsoon, which strongly influences the Central Ganga Plain.

The Central Ganga Plain is both highly dependent on the Indian Summer Monsoon and an important agricultural region. However, long-term and high-resolution palaeoclimate records from this region have remained limited, with earlier studies often relying on biological indicators or concentrating mainly on the Holocene period.
