Bay of Bengal Network of Ocean Researchers for Fisheries (BOB-NOR)

Why in News?

India, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh and the Maldives have jointly launched the Bay of Bengal Network of Ocean Researchers for Fisheries (BOB-NOR) to strengthen climate-resilient fisheries in the Bay of Bengal region.

Key Features

  • Objective: To improve understanding of changing fish populations and promote science-based fisheries research and management.
  • Regional cooperation: Brings together ocean researchers, fisheries scientists and experts from the participating countries.
  • Data integration: Combines satellite observations, oceanographic surveys, climate indicators and fisheries data.
  • Research focus: Examines how changes in the following factors affect fish populations:
    • Sea temperature
    • Monsoon patterns
    • Salinity
    • Ocean productivity
    • Ocean currents
  • Areas of study: Changes in fish distribution, migration, recruitment and abundance.
  • Management approach: Promotes predictive and climate-informed fisheries management, moving beyond conventional catch-based assessments.
  • Coordination: The network is coordinated by the Bay of Bengal Programme Inter-Governmental Organisation (BOBP-IGO).
