About Beaufort Castle

• Beaufort Castle, also known as Qalaat al-Shaqif, is a 12th-century fortress located in southern Lebanon.
• It is situated near the Litani River and overlooks parts of the Israel–Lebanon border region.
• The fortress stands on a high ridge, providing extensive surveillance over surrounding valleys, transportation routes, and military approaches.
• Due to its elevated position, it has been of strategic military importance for centuries.

Historical Background

• The castle gained prominence during the Lebanese Civil War.
• During the conflict, the Palestine Liberation Organization and its allies occupied the fortress and used it as a base for operations against Israel.
• Its strategic location made it one of Israel’s principal military targets in southern Lebanon.
