Why in News?
Bidriware, the centuries-old metal craft of Bidar, Karnataka, is facing economic pressure due to rising prices of silver, copper and zinc, along with declining demand. Higher input costs are reducing the margins of artisans and small-scale producers and raising concerns about the sustainability of this traditional craft.
About Bidriware
Bidriware originated in Bidar during the 14th century under the Bahmani Sultans. The craft is known for its distinctive blackened metal surface with intricate silver inlay work and is closely associated with the cultural heritage of Bidar.
The basic material used is an alloy of zinc and copper in a ratio of 16:1, into which thin sheets of pure silver are engraved to create artistic designs. The finished product gets its characteristic black colour through a specialised oxidation process, while the silver inlay provides the contrasting decorative appearance.
The traditional production of Bidriware involves an eight-stage process, requiring considerable craftsmanship and manual skill.
