The Union Ministry of Fisheries, Animal Husbandry and Dairying (MoFAHD) has signed a Technical Cooperation Programme (TCP) agreement with the UN Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) to strengthen Blue Port infrastructure in India.

About the Agreement

  • FAO’s Technical Cooperation Programme (TCP) on Strengthening of Blue Ports will assist the Government of India in enhancing the technical capacities of fishing ports.
  • The programme focuses on addressing key environmental, social, and economic challenges that affect the aquatic value chain.

Pilot Projects

  • Two pilot fishing ports—Vanakbara (Diu) and Jakhau (Gujarat)—will benefit from this TCP.
  • They will receive strategic and operational tools to identify and formulate investment projects aimed at tackling key challenges.

About the Blue Ports Initiative

  • It seeks to transform marine and coastal areas into socially, economically, and environmentally sustainable zones.
  • The initiative involves participation of all relevant stakeholders.
  • Fishing ports act as hubs in the maritime industry, where diverse activities converge and directly impact community livelihoods.
  • By optimizing these impacts, fishing ports can emerge as strategic platforms for growth and value creation at local, national, and regional levels.

Conclusion
The Blue Ports Initiative promotes a Blue Transformation of fishing ports, helping them adopt sustainable processes that contribute to long-term socio-economic growth and environmental conservation.
