BRICS Heads of Space Agencies (HOSA) Meeting 2026

Union Minister of State (Independent Charge) for Science and Technology, Jitendra Singh, on 24 June 2026 proposed the concept of a “BRICS Space Economy” as the next frontier of global growth. He called upon BRICS member countries to work collectively to unlock new opportunities in innovation, investment, entrepreneurship, and sustainable development through enhanced cooperation in the space sector.

Addressing the valedictory session of the BRICS Heads of Space Agencies (HOSA) Meeting in Bengaluru, the Minister emphasized that BRICS nations possess the scientific expertise, technological capabilities, and industrial strength required to emerge as a major force in the rapidly expanding global space economy.

The two-day meeting was hosted by Indian Space Research Organisation under India’s BRICS Chairship 2026.

The event brought together heads of space agencies and senior officials from the following BRICS member countries: Brazil, China, Egypt, Ethiopia, Indonesia, Iran, Russia, South Africa and the United Arab Emirates.  

What is the BRICS Space Economy?

The proposed BRICS Space Economy envisions greater collaboration among BRICS countries in areas such as:

  • Satellite manufacturing and launches
  • Space-based communication and navigation services
  • Earth observation and climate monitoring
  • Space applications for agriculture, disaster management, and resource mapping
  • Private-sector participation and startup ecosystems
  • Space technology innovation and commercialization.
