Centre formally marks 28 strategic Ladakh sites

Why in News?

The Government of India, in consultation with the Union Territory administration of Ladakh, has identified 28 places and geographical features in Ladakh using standard names on the official maps of the Survey of India. The initiative aims to facilitate the accurate recognition of these geographical features and create greater public awareness about them.

About the Identified Geographical Features

The 28 identified features include peaks, mountains, passes, glaciers, valleys, rivers, lakes and other geographical features. Among the identified peaks and mountains are Atisha Giri, Kanishka Peak, Karun Pir, Martand Giri, Zorawar Peak, Drak Karpo, Jolmori, Rinchen Zangpo, Sakyasri Giri, Marpa Lotsava Ri, Milarepa Kangri, Shiva Ri and Maheshvara Ri.

Other land features include Brangsa, Kuksel, Dehra Compass, Gogra, Kumarayana Point, Panglung and Shamal Lungpa. The identified passes are Chapchingal Pass and Shachmirk Pass, while Parpik and Skamri have been identified as glaciers.

The list also includes Shkorga Valley, Guru Rinpoche Lake, Yangpa River and Hot Spring, classified respectively as a valley, lake, river and water body.
