Centre Launches ‘Arunachal Kiwi’ Mission to Boost Kiwi Cultivation

On May 20, 2026, the Union Minister for Development of North Eastern Region (DoNER), Shri Jyotiraditya M. Scindia, launched the “Mission on Arunachal Kiwi: The USP of Arunachal Pradesh” in Itanagar. This comprehensive, cluster-based initiative aims to revitalize the kiwi value chain and establish Arunachal Pradesh as a globally competitive hub for organic kiwis.

Key Highlights of the Mission

  • Outlay: Approximately ₹167 crore.
  • Implementation Strategy: A “whole-of-government” convergence-led model involving the Ministry of DoNER, the Ministry of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare, the Ministry of Food Processing Industries, NABARD, ICAR-CITH, APEDA, NERAMAC, and private stakeholders.
  • Infrastructure: The mission establishes six integrated post-harvest management hubs in key growing regions: Ziro Valley (Lower Subansiri), Dirang and Kalaktang (West Kameng), Shi Yomi, and Dibang Valley.
  • Operational Goals:
    • Creating 2,000 metric tonnes of cold-chain capacity.
    • Extending the shelf life of kiwis from the current 7–10 days to nearly 45 days.
    • Implementing over 30 strategic interventions, including QR-enabled traceability for individual farmers and restoring organic certification (NPOP).
    • Promoting value-added products like juice, candy, and freeze-dried kiwi.
    • Targeting international export markets by FY 2028.

Strategic Market Positioning

The mission leverages Arunachal Pradesh’s unique November–January harvest window, which coincides with the off-season for major global producers like New Zealand. This timing provides a strategic “first-mover” advantage in markets across South-East Asia, the Middle East, and Europe. Additionally, the initiative integrates agri-tourism, promoting farm-stays and “farm-to-fork” experiences in the Ziro Valley and Dirang regions.

The “Brand North East” Framework

This mission is part of a larger, coordinated effort by the government to identify and promote one Unique Selling Proposition (USP) for each of the eight North Eastern states. Current identified products include:
