Centre Rolls Out E20 Fuel Nationwide with 95 RON Standard

The Union government has mandated the nationwide supply of E20 petrol (20% ethanol-blended fuel) with a minimum octane rating of 95 RON from 1st April, marking a major step in India’s clean energy transition and ethanol blending programme.

The directive, issued by the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas through a notification dated February 17, requires oil marketing companies to ensure the availability of this upgraded fuel across petrol pumps from April 1.

What is E20 Fuel?

  • E20 petrol is a blend of:
    • 20% ethanol (biofuel)
    • 80% petrol
  • Ethanol is produced from agricultural sources such as sugarcane, maize, and other grains

Key Features of the New Mandate

  • Minimum 95 Research Octane Number (RON) requirement
  • Compliance with Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) specifications
  • Provision for temporary exemptions in select regions under special conditions

Why 95 RON Matters

The higher octane rating improves fuel performance by:

  • Reducing engine knocking (irregular combustion)
  • Enhancing engine efficiency and longevity
  • Delivering smoother vehicle performance

For comparison:

  • Regular petrol in India: 91–92 RON
  • Ethanol: ~108 RON
  • Blending ethanol raises the overall octane level significantly

Objectives Behind the Move

The rollout of E20 fuel is part of India’s broader strategy to:

  • Reduce dependence on imported crude oil
  • Enhance energy security
  • Lower carbon emissions and promote cleaner fuels
  • Support farmers by boosting demand for ethanol-producing crops

Significance

The policy represents a key milestone in India’s push toward sustainable mobility and biofuel adoption. By increasing domestic ethanol use, the government aims to simultaneously address environmental concerns and reduce the country’s fuel import bill.
