Chandrayaan-3 receives 2026 AIAA Goddard Astronautics Award

Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO)’s Chandrayaan-3 mission has been honoured with the 2026 Goddard Astronautics Award by the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics (AIAA) in Washington DC. India’s Ambassador to the United States, Vinay Kwatra, accepted the award on behalf of ISRO at the AIAA ASCEND 2026 Conference.

What is Chandrayaan-3?

Chandrayaan-3 is India’s third lunar exploration mission launched by ISRO to demonstrate safe soft-landing and rover operations on the Moon.

On August 23, 2023 Chandrayaan-3 became the first spacecraft in history to successfully soft-land near the Moon’s south pole. The mission marked a major milestone in global space exploration and India’s space programme. The lunar south pole is considered scientifically important because it may contain water ice deposits, valuable mineral resources, and clues about the Moon’s geological evolution.

Chandrayaan-3 demonstrated successful soft landing capability. It included Vikram Lander and Pragyan Rover. It conducted scientific experiments on lunar surface composition and temperature. It strengthened India’s indigenous space technology capabilities.

What is the Goddard Astronautics Award?

The Goddard Astronautics Award is the highest honour conferred by the AIAA for exceptional achievements in astronautics.

  • The award is given to individuals or teams for outstanding contributions to space science and technology.
  • It commemorates Robert H. Goddard, regarded as a pioneer of modern rocketry.
  • Robert Goddard’s early liquid-fuel rocket experiments laid the foundation for modern astronautics.
  • The award assumed its current form in 1975 after expansion of its selection criteria.
