Chilean wasp named after David Attenborough

Scientists at the Natural History Museum in London have discovered a new species of wasp in Chile, naming it Attenboroughnculus tau to celebrate the 100th birthday of legendary naturalist David Attenborough on May 8, 2026.

The discovery, which was announced on May 7, 2026, honours Attenborough’s lifelong contribution to nature and wildlife education.

A Unique and Tiny Discovery

Measuring just 3.5 millimetres, the tiny parasitic wasp is remarkably different from other kinds of wasps. Because the insect cannot fit into any established genus and species, researchers have placed it within its own entirely new genus.

The wasp was originally collected in Chile’s Valdivia Province in 1983. However, its unusual features were only recently noticed by researchers studying old museum collections.
