CJI forms four dedicated benches to exclusively hear the oldest pending cases

Chief Justice of India (CJI) Surya Kant has constituted four dedicated benches to exclusively hear the oldest pending civil and criminal cases before the Supreme Court of India.

  • The initiative aims to ensure the speedy disposal of decades-old disputes and reduce the long-standing pendency of cases in the apex court.
  • These special benches will function on non-miscellaneous daysTuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday.
  • In the Supreme Court’s scheduling system:
    • Mondays and Fridays are miscellaneous days, primarily reserved for fresh filings, admission matters, and preliminary hearings.
    • Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays are non-miscellaneous (regular) days, meant for detailed hearings and final disposal of cases.
  • By exempting these benches from miscellaneous matters, the Court intends to provide uninterrupted judicial time for hearing and deciding its oldest pending cases.

Pendency of Cases in the Supreme Court

  • According to the National Judicial Data Grid (NJDG) the Supreme Court has 96,045 pending cases. Of these 74,244 are civil cases, and 21,801 are criminal cases.
  • Among the pending matters 24 civil cases and 2 criminal cases have remained pending for more than 30 years. The oldest civil case has been pending since 1986. The oldest criminal case has been pending since 1991.
  • The move is expected to strengthen timely justice, reduce judicial backlog, and improve the overall efficiency of the Supreme Court’s case management system.
