Coastal Atmospheric Research Testbed (C-ART) inaugurated in Visakhapatnam

Why in the News?
The Indian Institute of Tropical Meteorology has established a Coastal Atmospheric Research Testbed (C-ART) at Andhra University, inaugurated on 1 May 2026 in Visakhapatnam.

About C-ART (Coastal Atmospheric Research Testbed)
Coastal Atmospheric Research Testbed is an open-field meteorological observatory designed as a national user facility for advanced atmospheric and climate research, particularly in coastal regions.

Key Features

  • Continuous and integrated atmospheric observations.
  • Focus on coastal weather systems and monsoon dynamics.
  • Supports collaborative research among institutions.
  • Enables advanced data collection for model development.

Objectives

  • Improve understanding of monsoon convection processes.
  • Enhance parameterisation schemes in numerical weather prediction models.
  • Facilitate data assimilation for better forecast accuracy.
  • Strengthen model evaluation and diagnostics.

Significance

  • Improves early warning systems for cyclones and extreme weather events.
  • Enhances disaster preparedness and management in coastal areas.
  • Contributes to more accurate weather forecasting and climate modelling.
  • Strengthens India’s research infrastructure in atmospheric sciences.
