Colobus congoensis: A new monkey species discovered in Congo

Scientists have identified an orange-mouthed colobus monkey as a new species, named Colobus congoensis.

  • The discovery has been published in the journal PLOS One.
  • The monkey is found in the forests of the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), particularly in Lomami National Park.
  • It is only the fifth new primate species discovered in Africa in the last 75 years.
  • The species was first photographed during an expedition in 2008, while a second confirmed sighting was made in 2018, leading to detailed scientific studies.

Key Features

  • It has bright orange lips, a unique feature among colobus monkeys.
  • It has slate-grey cheekbones, black-rimmed eyes, silky black fur, and a white patch around the anus.
  • The species belongs to the genus Colobus.

Behaviour

  • Unlike many other primates, it does not usually flee when approached.
  • Instead, it climbs higher into the forest canopy and quietly observes intruders.
  • It produces loud roaring calls that can travel long distances.

Local Significance

  • The monkey is locally known as Likweli.
  • The Mituku community calls it “Kasaba Nkoni,” meaning “the branch shaker.”
  • Local communities had limited knowledge of this species compared to other nearby primates, highlighting its rarity.
