Commonwealth Games 2026

Why in News?
India concluded its campaign at the Commonwealth Games 2026 in Glasgow, Scotland, with 39 medals (13 gold, 17 silver and 9 bronze) to finish fourth in the overall medal standings. Glasgow also formally handed over the Commonwealth Games flag to India ahead of the 2030 Commonwealth Games in Ahmedabad.

About the Commonwealth Games 2026:

  • The 2026 edition was held in Glasgow, Scotland, from 23 July to 2 August 2026.
  • India finished fourth with 39 medals, despite the exclusion of medal-rich sports such as wrestling, badminton, table tennis, hockey and shooting.
  • Boxing emerged as India’s most successful discipline, contributing 10 medals, including a record seven gold medals.
  • Gold medals came from Preeti Pawar (54kg), Jaismine Lamboria (57kg), Sakshi Chaudhary (51kg), Priya Ghanghas (60kg), Arundhati Choudhary (70kg), Sachin Siwach (60kg) and Ankush Panghal (80kg). Lovlina Borgohain claimed silver in the women’s 75kg category, while Jadumani Singh (55kg) and Narender Berwal (+90kg) also won silver.
  • Weightlifting contributed eight medals, including India’s first gold of the Games through Mirabai Chanu in the women’s 48kg event.
  • The 2030 Commonwealth Games will be hosted by Ahmedabad, India, marking the centenary edition of the Games.
