Landsat spotted a super colony of Adelie penguins on the Danger Islands

The images taken from the American Landsat spacecraft have revealed a super colony of Adélie penguins on the Danger Islands, the most northerly point of the Antarctic Peninsula.

  • These penguins are numbering more than 1.5 million.
  • They were first noticed when great patches of their poo, or guano, showed up in pictures taken from the Landsat.
  • These Adélie penguins are crammed on to a rocky archipelago.
  • The researchers used an algorithm to search for sites of possible penguin activity.
  • This finding is really surprising since the Danger Islands are very difficult to reach.
