Demolition of 125-year-old Gurdwara Singh Sabha demolished in Pakistan

India has strongly condemned the reported demolition of the 125-year-old Gurdwara Sri Guru Singh Sabha Sahib in Farooqabad.

  • The Ministry of External Affairs expressed grave concern over the destruction of the historic shrine and reports that no meaningful action had been taken by the local authorities or the Evacuee Trust Property Board.
  • The Gurdwara is located about 70 km from Lahore and is regarded as an important site in Sikh history.

About Singh Sabha Movement

  • The Singh Sabha Movement was a religious, social, and cultural reform movement launched to revive and strengthen Sikh identity, religious practices, education, and social reform.
  • The movement began with the establishment of the first Singh Sabha at Amritsar in 1873.
  • The Lahore Singh Sabha was formally established in 1879, from where the movement expanded significantly.
  • Objectives: Revive and preserve Sikh religious identity and traditions, promote modern education among Sikhs, encourage social reform within the Sikh community, and counter the influence of Christian missionary activities and the Arya Samaj and its Shuddhi (reconversion) campaigns.
  • Influences: The movement was influenced by the European Enlightenment and the Indian Renaissance.
  • Prominent Founders and Leaders: Khem Singh Bedi, Gurmukh Singh, Harsha Singh Arora, Diwan Buta Singh, Mehar Singh Chawla. Thakur Singh Sandhawalia served as the first President (Chairman) and Giani Gian Singh served as the first Secretary.
