DRDO successfully conducts flight-tests to demonstrate multi-layered ballistic missile defence capability

Why in News?

The Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) successfully conducted three consecutive flight tests on June 10–11, 2026, demonstrating:

  • A multi-layered Ballistic Missile Defence (BMD) system against long-range ballistic missile threats.
  • The maiden flight test of the Naval Anti-Ship Missile–Medium Range (NASM-MR).

The successful trials place India among a select group of countries possessing advanced ballistic missile defence capabilities capable of engaging threats up to the Intercontinental Ballistic Missile (ICBM) class.

Ballistic Missile Defence (BMD) Tests

  • DRDO tested two interceptor missiles designed to neutralize enemy ballistic missiles with ranges between 2,000 km and 5,000 km.
  • Such missiles are categorized as Intermediate-Range Ballistic Missiles (IRBMs).
  • The tests validated India’s multi-layered missile shield.
