Duttaphrynus dhara-A New toad species recorded in Meghalaya

A new species of toad named Duttaphrynus dhara has been discovered at Mawphlang in the East Khasi Hills district of Meghalaya. The species has been named after the traditional Khasi female attire “Dhara”.

About the Discovery

The discovery was made during routine field surveys in the high-elevation landscapes of Mawphlang at an altitude of around 1,854 metres above sea level.
The tiny toads were found hiding among low vegetation and leaf litter in fallow agricultural fields located near dense montane forests.

Habitat and Characteristics

Unlike the common Asian toad, which is commonly found near human settlements, Duttaphrynus dhara prefers quiet forest-edge habitats in high-altitude hill ecosystems.
The species is adapted to the cool and moist conditions of the Khasi Hills region.

Significance

The discovery highlights the rich biodiversity and high level of endemism found in the northeastern region of India, especially in the montane ecosystems of Meghalaya.
It also underlines the ecological importance of conserving forest-edge habitats and high-altitude landscapes that support unique amphibian species.

About the Genus DuttaphrynusDuttaphrynus is a genus of true toads widely distributed across South and Southeast Asia.
Many species of this genus are known for their ecological adaptability, though several remain poorly studied in remote hill ecosystems.
