Flaming Festival 2019 begins at Nellore

  • The three day Flamingo Festival  started in Nellore district of Andhra Pradesh on January 20, 2019.
  • The area surrounding Pulicat Lake is considered a safe haven for migratory birds. Over 90,000 birds have come from far away places to the lake this year, though belated in view of the late arrival of the northeast monsoon and the failure of the southwest monsoon.
  • Pulikat Lake is the second largest brackish water ecosystem in the country after the Chilika lake in Odisha.
  • A large number of birds dotted the barringtonia trees, where they have built nests to raise their offspring. The birds return to their homeland once the offspring gain the capacity to withstand the long journey.
  •  As per the news reports, as against 26,535 birds last year, only about 10,114 migratory birds were spotted in Nellapattu and its surroundings this year. Lack of water due to deficit rainfall (64 per cent) is said to be the main reason.
  • The concentration of the flamingos depends on water-levels along with the presence of high algal, fish and benthic diversity. The groups of organisms, which live in or near the aquatic region are known as benthos or benthic zone.
